Thirty-Five

Gina almost felt a wash of fear go through her as she imagined what it would feel like to find out that someone had been watching from the loft in her own home. As she relayed the update to Jacob, she had even less hope for Darcie. They were dealing with a calculated and dangerous person.

A ding at the door sounded as Gina and Jacob entered the tiny convenience store. Sidling along towards the till, trying not to knock the toilet roll mountain over, Gina spotted the white-haired woman smiling at her from behind the till. ‘Hello, I’m DI Harte and this is DS Driscoll. Our colleague said that you saw someone acting suspiciously last night.’

‘That’s right.’ She finished piling the chewing gum onto a shelf next to the till.

Jacob moved to the left of Gina and used the counter to rest his pad on.

‘Can I take your name first?’

‘Mavis Hargreaves.’

‘Can you tell me what you saw?’

‘Yes, I actually close at seven and as soon as those doors were shut, I started the stocktake in the hope that I’d be home for three in the morning. It’s not a huge shop but I have what feels like a million low-value items. Just after closing, I thought I’d start with a ciggie to get myself warmed up so I went out the back and walked through the alleyway between me and the house next door. Just as I went to stub it out on the wall, I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. Actually, if you both come outside, I’ll show you where it was.’ She led the way back through the shop.

‘Let me get this right, it was just after seven?’ Gina stepped out and looked across at the forensics team through the glass windows of the showroom. The crowd had mostly dispersed, apart from two women.

Mavis continued. ‘Yes. To the right of the building there’s a road. Shoreford’s car park is behind the forecourt but sometimes people park on the road alongside it. Last night, I saw the shadowy outline of a person. It could have been a woman but I think it was a man. He was wearing dark colours. Had he stayed still, I wouldn’t have noticed him at all. If you look where the nearest streetlamp is’ – she pointed to the one on the main road that was opposite the entrance to Shoreford’s – ‘it doesn’t light up the side or back. I wondered if he was scoping the place out, but then he walked away in the direction of the back of the building so I thought that maybe he was just carrying on to one of the other roads or units behind Shoreford’s. I went back in and worked for a while. Later I heard the alarm sounding.’

‘Did you go out to see what was happening?’ Gina stepped back to allow a man with a snuffling dog to pass.

‘Yes, and I saw Shannon. I know who she is as she comes in now and again for a packet of mints.
